Milk Free Month: Day 5

I ate a cookie. So kill me.

First Impressions

My name is Susan and I hate milk. I think it's a vile liquid that's essentially cow uri... nevermind.

That being said, I eat and drink more milk than anyone who supposedly "hates" it ever should. I put milk in my tea, I put butter and cheddar on my bagel, I eat my Special K cereal with yogurt instead of milk, I eat pieces of cheese out of the fridge just cause, I drink Yop like a champ. These are daily occurrences.

I've done a lot of reading regarding milk's negative effects on the body and especially the skin. Since I have acne, I've been meaning to get off dairy for years, but I love dairy too much and nothing has pushed me far enough to actually step away from the cheese. All that changed one day at work.

I don't exactly believe in psychics, clairvoyants, seers or anything of that "paranormal" variety. I'm not closed off to it (on the contrary I am quite intrigued) but I'm also not convinced. A little over two weeks ago I was at work serving a lady, when in the middle of the conversation she (out of nowhere) said "You're allergic to milk, stop eating and drinking so much." After the blood returned to my face, I was a little taken aback. The lady informed me she was what her culture called a "seer" and that she could see that the state of my skin was as a result of all the dairy I was consuming.

I was freaked out, then in awe, then eventually pretty upset. I always swore to myself I wouldn't get all glossy eyed in the presence of someone claiming to have supernatural powers. I'm the person always watching Sylvia Browne on television screaming "Oh come on! She's making all this up! Why don't all you starry eyed fools see this! She' s describing your dead grandmother as short, wearing glasses and with a little extra weight - you're short, wearing glasses and carrying a little extra!!" And now here I was, leaning over the counter with my chin dreamily resting on my hand utter ridiculous phrases like "Really, tell me more." and "Yes, you are absolutely right! I bet you could also see that ________!"

After the nice lady left I realized that there are medical studies linking milk with acne, and that technically a very large percentage of the population was allergic to milk. But for some reason, this still worked on me and I decided to go milk free for a month. It started this Monday and ends on the 23rd of March.

So far I feel more energetic, my skin is clear (but this is due to the fact that I'm just finishing up my fourth month of Accutane), and the menu is proving easier than I thought. I don't eat meat, and I suspect eventually I'll grow pretty tired of pasta with red sauce and PB&J sandwiches but so far, so good.
